On March 7, 1980 two girls were discovered smoking cigarettes in the girls bathroom at Piscataway High School in New Jersey. The two girls were then sent to the principal's office where they were questioned. One of the two confessed to smoking cigarettes but the other girl, also known as TLO and aged fourteen at the time, would not admit it. So the vice principal, Theodore Choplick, had to search her bag. He discovered a package of cigarettes, marijuana, rolling paper and evidence that she was distributing it, like plastic bags, a list of people that owed her money and a large sum of money in one dollar bills. The school had no choice but to send the girls to the police station.
At the police station, TLO told officials that she had been selling marijuana at school. With that confession, along with all the hard evidence uncovered from her bag, the State of New Jersey pressed charges against TLO and a session began at the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court of Middlesex County.
